Self-defense is distinct from combat, sport, or fighting in that the aggressor targets a perceived vulnerable individual, exemplifying a predator-prey mentality. Often, this can be mitigated through situational awareness, attention to one's surroundings, and effective de-escalation techniques. Our culture tends to emphasize compliance and politeness, but we will discuss strategies for verbal confrontation, assertively deterring the attacker, and utilizing vocal commands to maintain a safe distance. When all alternative measures have been exhausted, physical intervention becomes the last resort in response to a legitimate threat. The physical response should be proportionate to the level of threat, relative size of the attacker, and prevailing circumstances. It is essential to recognize that self-defense situations are unregulated and unpredictable, unlike a controlled tournament. We will examine the application of pressure points and vital areas to target, as well as defense strategies against grabs, strikes, holds, and chokes.
